Chemical Peels

What is a Chemical Peel?

If you're suffering from fine lines, skin discoloration, enlarged pores and other imperfections on your skin, consider having a chemical peel. One of the most popular skin treatments in the country, chemical peels, also known as dermapeeling or chemexfoliation, uses an acid solution to remove the outer layer of the skin, effectively ridding it of wrinkles and light scarring.

How are Chemical Peels Performed?

During the procedure, your skin will be thoroughly cleansed before a trained technician paints the acid solution onto your face, exfoliating it and ridding it of the outer layer. You can choose between three levels of peels, including the superficial peel, the medium-depth peel and the deep chemical peel.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Chemical Peel?

The best chemical peel candidates are those suffering with the following problems:

  • Fine lines
  • Light sun damage or freckling
  • Hyperpigmentation or age spots
  • Enlarged pores
  • Slight scarring (due to acne, etc.)
  • Scaly patches and rough skin

While chemical peels work best on the face, they are also suitable for other areas on the body, including the arms, legs, neck, chest and hands. Chemical peels are not for everyone, though. If you are of Afro-Caribbean or Asian decent, if you have red hair and pale, freckled skin, if you have facial warts or abnormal pigmentation, or if you have a history of skin scarring, you may not be a good candidate for this procedure.

What Kind of Post-Operative Chemical Peel Care Can I Expect?

Your recovery following this procedure will depend on the level of peel you've chosen. Lighter peels may produce some redness and skin peeling, while deeper peels may leave you with blisters, scabs, swelling and extensive peeling.

We will most likely advise you to stay out of the sun for at least two weeks, and to wear an SPF of 45 or higher when going outside. You should also avoid wearing makeup and follow a specific skincare regimen outlined by your doctor. He may also prescribe you some ointments, creams or oral steroids to take following your peel.

What are the Typical Results of Chemical Peels?

Chemical peels are a great way to improve the appearance of fine lines, age spots, light sun damage and other imperfections, and most patients are thrilled with their new, refreshed, nearly flawless skin. However, since new lines and spots may appear over time, you may need to continue with a maintenance program to achieve the best results.
